The Working Group for Africa and West Asia affiliated to the International League of Peoples' Struggle (ILPS) issued a statement of solidarity in the wake of the earthquake which struck Syria and Turkey causing the death of thousands of people.

The ILPS condemned the western powers which previously exposed the lives of the inhabitants of the earthquake area to risk by using violence, sanctions, and the incitement of wars.

The Statement stressed that the economic sanctions imposed by Washington on Syria “Caesar’s law” since the year 2020, have weakened the capability of the Syrian people to rebuild and to fortify itself against natural disasters such as earthquakes, particularly in the aftermath of the destruction caused by years of war waged by imperialism on Damascus.

The Statement demanded the ending of all the unilateral sanctions against Syria, which are essentially the continuation of war by other means, and also called for putting a stop to military aggression, and the entry of real aid and emergency relief without impediments for all the disaster-stricken people without discrimination, and refraining from using food as a weapon.
