APN shows concern over the government decision to cut 2200 trees Ajloun Forest | The Arab Group for the Protection of Nature

During a recent meeting with representatives of several environmental NGOs and the Minster of the Environment, the Arab Group for the Protection of Nature (APN) expressed its concerns over the government's decision to cut 2200 trees from the forests of Ajloun, making way for the construction of a military academy in the area.

The Minister of the Environment declared that the Ministry approves of building a military academy in Bergesh/Ajloun, but that approval is conditional upon an evaluative study of the environmental impact of the project. The Minister stressed that the government will not give any licenses to build unless the project is in line with environmental laws and regulations.

Voicing another perspective, Mrs. Razan Zuayter, President of APN, said that some of the trees are more than 500 years old, and stressed the need to preserve the forests of Ajloun, especially considering that forests in Jordan are very limited and comprise less the 1% of the county's lands.
