APN discusses Palestine at the 27th session of the Human Rights Council | The Arab Group for the Protection of Nature

President of APN Razan Zuaiter was invited to participate in the 27th session of the Human Rights Council held in Geneva from 18-26 September 2014.

The session consisted of daily workshops covering ten key topics in addition to side activities and specialized meetings. Sessions included discussions on human rights abuses ranging from the current situations in Iraq, Syria and Palestine to the rights of indigenous peoples, women and the manifestations of modern slavery as well as the risks of drone warfare and hazardous waste dumped in residential areas. 

Zuaiter was invited by the Ma’arij Foundation for Peace and Development to participate as a keynote speaker in the first two specialized sessions on 19 September 2014 on human rights abuses by the Zionist entity. She spoke about their systematic war on food resources in Palestine along with Numan Baltaci and Michelle Helingdaal, representatives of the Global Network for Rights and Development. Recommendations were made by Arab Network for Food Sovereignty on the subject of Gaza. 

On 22 September 2014 Zuaiter spoke at the invitation of the National Group for Human Rights and the HAWA Society for Women about human rights in conflict zones discussing the need to resolve the root causes of conflicts and the importance of following the decisions made by the Council. Joining Zuaiter in the discussions were Ms. Abla Mahdi, director of HAWA Society for Women, Ms. Afaf Tawer of the Sudanese parliament, Dr. Abdul Wahab al-Hassan, an expert on international law, and Mr. Numan Baltaci.

Zuaiter was also involved in two interventions made on the 17th of September, on the economic sanctions and resulting threat to food security which affect the poor and marginalized; and the second about the conflicts in Kashmir impact on the rights of women with the International Muslim Women Union, headed by Shawl Shamim.She was also asked to present the final statement of the global campaign against sanctions imposed on Sudan. 

The Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body composed of 47 member states of the United Nations elected by the General Assembly. The Council is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights in all parts of the world, dealing with cases of violations, and making recommendations regarding them.
