APN issued the following statement on its rejection of Jordan’s deal to buy natural gas from Israel:

We, along with many Jordanians, were shocked by the Jordanian National Electric Power Company’s decision to buy 45 billion cubic meters of natural gas from the denied Palestinian territories through Israel over a period of 15 years for $15 billion USD. We, as APN and as part of this community, reject this agreement and for the sake of the security and sovereignty of Jordan call on the government and the National Electric Power Company not to complete the purchase of gas from Israel. Sealing this deal will entwine Jordan's economic and political security with Israel’s.

The deal will also interrupt the growing isolation of Israel in the world. We reject any agreement that reduces the isolation of Israel. Israel continues occupying Arab land and continues brutal aggressions against Palestinians, especially with the bloodshed of  the heinous massacres recently committed in the Gaza Strip. Partnership with this state will give them legitimacy to continue and resume crimes against humans, nature, and the earth. The deal poses a threat to the security of our nation. It will be a tool to control our economy and electricity. We call on the government to seek other options to supply Jordan with natural gas.

We also support alternative energy projects and research projects for natural gas in Jordan. We ask for the government’s attention to our statement so that we can preserve our security, sovereignty and dignity.
