On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Right to Food by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Council, President of APN, Mrs. Razan Zuaiter was invited to participate in the consultative meeting of civil society on the achievements and challenges of their application.

The meeting was held at the headquarters of the FAO on July 7 to 8, 2014. Zuaiter was asked to facilitate the session concerned with accountability and strengthening mechanisms established in the working group on civil society's role in overcoming obstacles to the application of the right to food at global, regional and local levels.

Zuaiter demanded that they not ignore the Arab region and focus on conflicts and occupations impacts on food security and nutrition. The meeting was attended by a group of global social movements and civil society organizations with a long track record in the struggle for the Right to Food and Food Sovereignty.

The objective to renew the commitment to move forward in the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines to the Right to Food were negotiated by states and adopted during the 27th session of the Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in November 2004.

The purpose of the Voluntary Guidelines is to give practical guidance to states in order to apply the Right to Food in the context of national food security problems as an additional tool to fight hunger and poverty and to integrate human rights into the work of agencies involved in food and agriculture. The report that came out of the meeting was presented at the 41st session of the Committee on Food Security in Rome in October 2014.

Information in the report will also be presented as a documentary film about the struggle of the people’s Right to Food.

Zuaiter appears in the documentary discussing the role of the Million Trees Campaign in Palestine.
