Recommendations of the The International Seminar on Genetically Modified Organisms

The International Seminar on 'Genetically Modified Organisms, Impacts and Risks' held in Amman on May 7-8, 2005 adopted the following recommendations:

  • Establishment of a pan-Arab committee to follow up on the implementation of the seminar's recommendations with the Arab Group for the Protection of Nature as a coordinator to pursue communication among participants.
  • Creation of a Jordanian national organization to spread awareness on the impacts and dangers of biotechnology.
  • Advocacy for the need to label food packages illustrating their contents, ingredients and whether they were genetically modified.
  • Facilitation of provision of laboratory tools and equipment to conduct tests aimed to detect the presence of genetically modified foodstuffs along with tests on plant seeds used in agriculture.
  • Activation of biosafety regulations.
  • Raised awareness of consumers about the impacts and dangers of GMOs to human health, environment, biodiversity and agriculture while educating them on the first international convention aimed to regulate the trans-boundary movement of GMOs.
  • Affirmation that the problems related to food and poverty have resulted from failure to apply the principles of food sovereignty, as well as mismanagement and poor distribution of food, and not from crops low yields.
