APN | Amman – Zoom
16 October 2024
On World Hunger Day 2024, APN alongside the People’s Coalition on Food Sovereignty (PCFS), Arab Network for Food Sovereignty (ANFS), and ILPS-Asia Pacific, co-organised a powerful webinar titled “Zero In: Palestine - Uphold the Palestinian People's Food Sovereignty!”.
APN Advocacy and Research Officer, Lisa Shahin, delivered a presentation highlighting the catastrophic effects of the ongoing genocide and war of starvation in Gaza. Shahin emphasized that this is part of a long-standing tactic by the Israeli occupation to weaponize food.
Gaza, once renowned for its fertile soil and rich agricultural legacy, is now witnessing the fastest onset of famine as a result of systematic destruction targeting its food systems through indiscriminate bombings, illegal weapons such as white phosphorus, razing, herbicide spraying, and destruction of essential infrastructure like water systems and solar panels, and poisoning soil and water.
Ending her presentation on a hopeful note, Shahin highlighted APN’s "Revive Gaza’s Farmland" project which aims to restore local food systems, counter the blockade, and build food sovereignty in Gaza. Since its launch, APN has rehabilitated over 600 dunums of farmland, reached 270 farmers, and restored 17 greenhouses and four water wells, providing a lifeline to Gaza's agricultural sector and fostering steadfastness in the face of the occupation.
