APN is Leading a Working Group of the Global Civil Society Mechanism around Food Insecurity in Protracted Crises | The Arab Group for the Protection of Nature

APN led the Open Ended Working Group Meeting of the Committee on World Food Security on Food Insecurity in Protracted Crises, which was held at the headquarters of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on the 5th and 6th  of March, 2014  in Rome. The meeting was attended by member countries as well as international organizations and the private sector.

The meeting aims to encourage political commitment towards the transformation of policies related to food insecurity and malnutrition during conflict and natural crises.APN was represented by Mrs. Razan Zuayter who was elected to be in the Steering Committee of the High Level Expert Forum on Food Insecurity in Protracted Crises. Mariam Jaja, who is responsible for APN's Policy Program was also present, as she is representing civil society in the technical support team that is preparing Agenda for Action that will be endorsed by member states in October of 2014.  

APN organized a preparatory meeting for the civil society on the 4th of March in 2014 to identify priorities and prepare interventions.

The meeting was attended by Gertrude Kenyangi  from Uganda; Kenneth Thesing and Emily Mattheisen from America; Sheri Arnott from Canada; Aftab Alam from Bangladesh, Ahmed Sourani from Palestine; and Luca Chinotti from Switzerland.The interventions of the civil society participants focused on the importance of understanding the diversity of the world's crises in order to understand the various causes that lead to food insecurity and malnutrition.

It also stressed the need to transform the principles in the draft agenda of the working group into practical steps in order to establish the role of each of the parties concerned and to include steps to improve the status of food security and nutrition of refugees and displaced peoples.

APN is an active member of the Civil Society Mechanism which is associated with the Committee on World Food Security with its president, Razan Zuayter, elected to represent West Asia in the Coordinating Committee. For nearly 10 years, APN has been leading the efforts of global civil society in bringing to attention the subject of protracted crises, wars, and occupation to international organizations, and it had a big role in pushing for this issue to become in the top priorities of the Committee on World Food Security.
