It was announced at the Coordination and Management Meeting of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) that was held at the end of July 2015 that the Arab Group for the Protection of Nature (APN) will be granted Special Consultative Status.

Consultative Status will allow APN to actively engage with ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, as well as with the United Nations Secretariat, programme, funds and agencies in a number of ways. APN works intensively to influence food and agriculture policies through participation in various international fora and it aspires to do the same through the ECOSOC.ECOSOC is one of the six main organs of the United Nations established by the UN Charter in 1945. It is responsible for coordinating the economic, social and related work of 14 UN specialized agencies, their functional commissions and five regional commissions.

ECOSOC serves as the central forum for discussing international economic and social issues, and for formulating policy recommendations addressed to member states and the United Nations. It is responsible for promoting higher standards of living, full employment and economic and social progress; identifying solutions to international economic, social and health problems; facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation and encouraging universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
