'From the Besieged Farmer to the Besieged Family': A Relief Campaign to Aid Gaza Farmers-2007-2008

A campaign was launched to mobilize support and funds to help Gaza families in the wake of Israel's war on Gaza in 2007-2008 and the stifling blockade that followed. Donations were used to buy food products from Gaza farmers and distributed in baskets containing recommended components for complete nutrition. They were distributed among needy families who had lost their sources of income due to the Israeli assaults as the result of forced business closure, loss of employment or the death of the household's primary income earner.

Relief Aid Types and Distribution:

  • The baskets contained a variety of locally produced food items including cheese, eggs, dates, thyme, oil, vegetables and other locally produced products.
  • 1640 baskets were prepared and distributed during the campaign.
  • The distribution process covered all areas of Gaza strip with the help of local bodies and groups.

Outcomes:

  • The campaign helped to foster the principles of social solidarity and self-reliance in a situation of extreme poverty as a result of the Israeli attacks and blockade;
  • And enhanced the morale and productivity of the Gazan farmers.

Impacts of the Israeli Aggression on the Health Situation in Gaza:

  • Nearly 90 thousand families suffered from lack of drinking water as a result of contamination.
  • Destruction of infrastructure.
  • Pollution of agricultural land.
  • Around 80 thousand children suffered from psychological problems as a result of the intensive shelling and bombardment.
  • Thousands of families as well as hospitals suffered from electricity cut-offs.
  • More than 30 thousand Palestinians suffered in inhuman conditions around Rafah Crossing.
  • Over 30 thousand children experienced malnutrition due to contamination of water and food.
  • Around 70% of Gaza residents were unable to secure food without aid.
