Food Sovereignty held in Rome

The Working Group on Impacts of Wars and Conflicts was set up upon a request from APN during the annual conference of the International Planning Committee for Food Sovereignty held in Rome, Italy in October, 2005. Further consultations were held on the issue from October, 2006 till 2012.

Mission (as proposed by APN):

  • Monitoring impacts of wars, conflicts and occupations on the environment and livelihoods.
  • Searching for and discussing ways to address such impacts, creating plans to influence decision makers with a view to reducing them, protecting the environment and mobilizing support for the role of NGOs and CSOs in such efforts.

The Working Group Addresses the Following Issues:

  • Impacts of wars, conflicts and occupations on livelihoods in local communities and on environmental diversity and natural resources.
  • Identify obligations, rights and commitments of parties in accordance with international law conventions and UN resolutions.
  • Define gaps in the current knowledge and institutional functions in addition to addressing the need for an international convention to deal with and govern issues relating to the protection of livelihoods in times of wars.
  • Organization of a solidarity campaign focusing on damage inflicted on the lives of the Palestinian people.
