With a debate continuing on the impacts of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), APN initiated efforts to raise awareness on the issue along with CSOs and other concerned parties leading to the creation of a national committee on GMOs and bio-safety.

What do you know about the GMOs?

Genetic Engineering (GE) is a new, radical technology that manipulates the genes in the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Unlike traditional breeding, genetic engineering creates new life forms that would never occur in nature and also new and unpredictable health and environmental risks. To create GE crops, genes from bacteria, viruses, plants, animals and even humans have been inserted into plants like soybeans, corn, canola, and cotton.(more)

Why do GMOs spark fear and concern?

Biotechnology companies are inventing all sorts of techniques to engineer organisms, seeds and plants in ways that they claim could make crops easier to grow, foods more nutritious, and production more efficient. But many scientists and CSOs fear their impacts on human health, food and environment. (more)

Recommendations by an international seminar on GMOs

An international seminar held in Amman, on May 7-8, 2005 organized by APN drew attention to the risks and impacts of GMOs and the need to raise awareness on their impacts. (more)

Strengthening Biosafety Regulations

Biosafety is a term used to describe efforts to reduce and eliminate the potential risks resulting from biotechnology and its products. The Cartagena Protocol seeks to protect biological diversity from the potential risks posed by GMOs. (more)
