1-The Civil Society Mechanism (CSM) For Food Security Committee(CFS)

APN is an active member of CSM, the largest mechanism of civil society organizations (CSOs) seeking to influence agriculture, food security and nutrition policies and actions, nationally, regionally and globally. CSM functions as a facilitating body for CSO/NGO consultation and participation in the Committee on Food Security (CFS), an intergovernmental body set up in the UN system to serve as a forum for review and follow up of food security policies.

APN, represented by its president Razan Zuayter, was chosen to represent the Western Asia region in the CSM coordinating committee. APN works to mobilize as well as facilitate participation of Arab CSOs in the CSM consultations and meetings with CFS, as well as in negotiations with the Committee on policies and principles issued such as the Voluntary Guidelines on Responsible Governance of Tenure, Fisheries, Forests and the Global Strategic Framework for Food Security and Nutrition.

Achievements:

  • Focusing CFS attention on the global and regional priorities particular to the issue of food insecurity during conflicts. APN was named as a coordinator of the Global Civil Society Working Group concerned with food security in protracted crises.
  • Zuayter became a member of the High-level Expert Forum (HLEF) Steering Committee on Protracted Crises organized by CFS.
  • APN managed to call for a global CSO consultation which took place prior to the Forum's meeting in Rome in September, 2012. The CSO participation in the Forum's meeting was very successful.
