On 6/4/2017, APN General Manager Mariam Al Jaajaa spoke at the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome on “Monitoring the Implementation of Committee on World Food Security Policies.”

The CFS is the foremost international platform on food agricultural and food security policies and is part of the United Nations. The session was organized by the permanent representative for the German Confederation in Rome and the International Civil Society Mechanism.

During the session, short speeches were also given by the German, French, and South African Ministers as well as UN representatives in Rome. APN expressed concern over countries’ inability implement CFS policy recommendations if they are not effectively transferred and discussed at the regional and national level. APN also spoke about the heavy burden placed on civil society as they have taken all responsibility to push different sectors to implement CFS decisions.

As such, it called on the UN agencies to facilitate collaboration with civil society organizations to ensure the effective promotion of CFS policy recommendations in avoidance of them becoming purely conceptual, stressing on the importance of these policies to eradicate food and nutritional food insecurity.

Ms. Al Jaajaa represents West Asia in the Civil Society Mechanism that belongs to the CFS, and coordinates the Working Group on Protracted Crises. After 3 years of heated negotiation, APN was successful in pushing CFS and its member States to adopt a framework on facing food insecurity in times of crises, wars, and occupation.
